RIDE, WALK AND WANDER ON THE EAST GIPPSLAND RAIL TRAIL

There’s a smoother journey ahead for walkers, runners, cyclists and adventurers on the East Gippsland Rail Trail, thanks to the Regional Tourism Investment Fund.

Tom McIntosh today acknowledged that an upgrade of an 11.46 kilometre section of the trail at Simpsons Creek is complete.

Completion of works means the entire almost 100km East Gippsland Rail Trail has been resurfaced, making it safer and more enjoyable for users of all abilities.

The upgrades were completed by local contractors using locally sourced materials, further supporting the local community.

The trail is one of the longest in Australia and offers visitors access to some of the most natural and beautiful experiences in Victoria, with something for everyone no matter their hiking or cycling experience.

Extending from Bairnsdale to Orbost, the trail is a scenic path through stunning natural bushland, farmland and forests, and navigates historic trestle bridges such as the Stony Creek Trestle Bridge which is a popular stop along the way.

The trail is particularly favoured by ‘bikepackers’ and international cycle tours as it can take multiple days to complete, encouraging overnight stays in the region. Last year it attracted an estimated 32,000 visitors, with an additional 3,600 visitors expected per year now the whole track is fully resurfaced.

Nature-based tourism is big business in Gippsland, driving major visitor demand.

Works nearby have seen upgrades to the Rokeby to Neerim Trail to improve signage, amenities and connectivity along the trail network, as well as pre-construction works to extend the trail to Noojee. Works on Raymond Island saw the upgrade and extension of trails and signage - both projects were supported through investment in tourism infrastructure in the region.

The project was delivered by the East Gippsland Rail Trail Committee. To learn more about the East Gippsland Rail Trail and plan your next adventure, visit eastgippslandrailtrail.com
