The Allan Labor Government is making it safer and easier for older people in Gippsland to age with dignity and close to home.
Visiting on behalf of the Minister for Ageing, Member for Eastern Victoria Tom McIntosh today announced that the new Orbost public aged care home is now complete.
The $45.3 million facility will be named ‘Snowy River Views Residential Care’, with residents set to begin moving in soon.
The new public aged care facility features 38 single rooms with ensuites, arranged into small household models with shared kitchens, dining and lounge spaces.
The contemporary, dementia-friendly design promotes social connection and supports residents with complex care and mental health needs.
The new home replaces Lochiel House and Waratah Lodge.
More than 420 workers were involved in construction, supporting local jobs and boosting the Orbost economy.
Victoria is Australia’s largest public provider of residential aged care, with more than 150 public sector services across the state.
More than 90 per cent of these services are in rural and regional Victoria, with most operating in communities where the public sector is the only provider.
The Labor Government has invested more than $700 million to modernise public aged care, including more than $370 million through the Rural and Regional Public Sector Residential Aged Care Revitalisation Strategy to replace and refurbish facilities.
Thanks to sustained and significant investment from the Labor Government, these services play a critical role in our health system – supporting people with complex needs, reducing pressure on local hospitals, and acting as a provider of last resort in communities where there are limited alternatives.
